Italia Day 2: Firenze

Bienvenuti to Florence!

Friday am we got up about 7 and ate breakfast, then hit the road South to Florence. Due to traffic, a few missed turns, etc. we were running late for our 1:30pm appt at the Accademia to tour Michelangelo's The David (panic!). We finally found the parking garage about 1:10, and ran through downtown Florence, not really knowing where we were going, and finally catching glimpses of signs, arrived at the Accademia at 1:30pm. Praise Jesus! The tour had not started yet! No photos allowed on the tour, which was a major bummer, but saw the David. And WOW. What an incredible 14 foot masterpiece of pure marble. Michelangelo worked on it from 1502-1504, finishing at the age of 29! Crazy! Absolutely fantastic! After our tour, we found a streetside cafe to grab a quick lunch before heading into the Medici Chapels.

No photos inside this one either. Very cool though!

Then we walked through & around the Duomo (gothic cathedral) in Florence.

The VivaHotel was about 20 min outside of town in Barberino - Tuscany! Lovely establishment... great staff, beautiful place, only 35 rooms so nice and small... Slept hard again that night.

Plus, an authentic Italian, family-run restaurant was right across the street!!! We had a waiter who didn't speak English, delicious homemade potato/beef ravioli and crepes alla fiorentino. Yum!!!
