This morning we had a post-op appt with Dr. Quinn. J's incision is healing well, and he can resume normal activities as he feels up to it. We are thankful for that.
Surgical Report: the surgeon cut down to the fascia (connective tissue covering muscles) but didn't penetrate the abdominal muscles. They removed a few lymph nodes in the area that were negative for cancer. However some of the tissue still had active tumor cells. They reported mostly clear margins, but the Pathologist found one thin line of cells that appeared to extend to the border. In light of this information, a 3rd surgery (Jacob's 6th overall) may be recommended.
In 6-8 weeks, they will repeat a CT of the chest/abd/pelvis as well as an MRI to evaluate things further. They want to wait till that area heals & fluid is absorbed to get the clearest picture possible (to better see cancer vs. scar tissue, etc.) Our next appt with Dr. V is next Wed, March 3rd. There is still some debate over whether this is a reoccurrence (related to first cancer) or a second primary tumor. If the former, then they will probably continue on with the radiation/chemo as planned. If the latter, radiation may not be recommended & additional surgery may be ahead of us. It would be similar to these last two (and not for about 3 months). Dr. Quinn will be discussing possible treatment options with Dr. V before our next appt. We hope to find out more then.
