Hurry Up and Wait

Today we met with Dr. L, Jacob's radiation oncologist, at the Cancer Center. He was friendly and informative, explaining things well and laying out the plan. Before J can begin any kind of radiation treatment, he will receive a CT scan - not for diagnostics - but to determine the exact field of radiation & construct a mold/form (one type of these) for treatments. We're hoping to get that appt taken care of next week. Then we will have to wait two weeks while they process everything and prepare things for his treatment. 

Hopefully J will be able to begin the course of 28 radiation treatments by the end of January. He will receive about 30 min of radiation to his right abdomen each day, Monday thru Friday. Once a week, he will also receive a dose of Cisplatin (chemotherapy) through an IV. The doctor advised us that the most likely side effects from the radiation are fatigue, nausea & local skin irritation. He believes that J will tolerate everything pretty well overall, and it will all be done on an outpatient basis. One month after the conclusion of these treatments, he will have a follow up CT scan to look for any evidence of cancer.


In the mean time, we are back to waiting and living one day at a time. They should call us this week with a time for the next appt.
